The primary objectives of the scholarship program are to support the development of a knowledgeable work force available to provide professional service to the horticulture community of the metropolitan St. Louis area, to support these individuals with financial aid and to recognize those who seek professional goals.

The Landscape and Nurserymen's Association of Greater St. Louis, a Horticulture Co-op of Metro St. Louis member organization, is a horticultural business trade organization founded in 1933. Members represent the professions of nursery and greenhouse production, retail garden center management, landscape design, landscape construction and management, arboriculture, horticultural product manufacturing, sales and distribution and other related horticulture businesses and organizations. The LNAGSL is dedicated to promoting quality horticulture in the St. Louis region by providing a forum for education, fellowship, sharing and problem solving.

MAKING OUR WORLD A GREENER PLACE (LITERALLY)
Environmental Awareness & Industry Vision
Earns National Award For Local Retailer

Jennifer Schamber, General Manager of Greenscape Gardens in Manchester, Missouri, was awarded Green Profit Magazine's 2007 Young Retailer Award on July 14th, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. The judging was based on criteria including: industry vision, customer service, community service and communications. The award ceremony took place at the OFA Short Course, U.S. floriculture's premier educational and trade show event.

The award was based on a nomination by an industry peer, an essay and a series of telephone interviews. The topic of the essay was "How will your store stay and important to today's consumers and the local community?" Schamber's answer to this question includes positioning the company as a leader in sustainable and eco-friendly business practices. As society becomes more aware of the adverse environmental and ecological impact our current lifestyle has caused, consumers now have a better understanding of the importance of "being green". Greenscape Gardens has focused its mission on guiding its customers to make better decisions about managing their own eco-systems right in their own yards.

Sustainable gardening practices include: renewing the Earth with the use of plants that are native to our region, maintaining good plant and turf health which will reduce the need for chemicals, using organic or natural fertilizers/products, and recycling. Recycling includes both yard waste (in the form of compost) and horticultural plastics. These practices will have a healing and renewing effect on the environment. Greenscape Gardens, located in St. Louis County, is positioning itself to be a leader in eco-friendly garden solutions for the community.

"Consumers want to make eco-friendly decisions," said Schamber, "But it is the responsibility of retailers to make these choices easy and convenient."
